Is the road ahead electric?

Moving from the familiarity of fuel-powered internal combustion engines (ICE) to the
silent hum of electric vehicles (EVs) may seem a little daunting, but the experience
offers a refreshing twist on the road ahead.
Firstly, the basics remain unchanged. Steering wheels, accelerator pedals, and
brake pedals are all still there, but say goodbye to the complexities of manual

gearboxes and clutch pedals. EVs simplify the driving experience with single-speed
reduction gears, eliminating the need for multi-speed transmissions.
Once in motion, the contrast becomes clear. EVs glide with serene silence,
punctuated only by the whisper of wind and the hum of electric motors. Acceleration
is a revelation, thanks to instantaneous torque delivery, making EVs ideal for urban
manoeuvres. Yet, the weight distribution introduces a new dynamic. While long
wheelbases improve stability, hefty battery packs can challenge agility, but at the
same time, offer far more interior space.
A subtle difference in braking adds to the EV experience. Lift off the throttle, and
regenerative braking slows the car, recharging the battery in the process. Traditional
friction brakes still play a role, but their integration with regenerative braking requires
finesse. Some EVs even offer one-pedal driving, where lifting off the throttle is
enough for both slowing and stopping.
Driving an EV may be a departure from tradition, but it's a journey worth embracing.
A blend of the familiar and the novel, promising a smoother, quieter, and greener ride
into the future.
